Trump Cannot Handle the Coronavirus
It’s safe to say that President Trump and Governor Cuomo are both the beneficiaries of nepotism and patronage. The stark difference, laid bare by this crisis, is that Cuomo is a highly competent scion. The virus has not tamed Trump’s instinct towards self-preservation and self-promotion. It has, however, affirmed and displayed Trump’s inability to empathize. Cuomo, on the other hand, has taken responsibility as well as blame; taken decisive, creative action amidst wartime pressure; and has struck a unifying, uplifting tone with his constituents. There is nothing like a generational crisis to differentiate the good leaders from the bad. I hope that this experience will lead to a reckoning among the American public to take politics more seriously. We must resist the appeal of entertaining antics and empty populism. We must elect leaders with experience, competence, and most of all — leaders who give a damn.
